Franklin Caravans

It was 1947 when a friend suggested to a 17 year-old Geoff Robertson that they take a Christmas holiday in Lorne, Victoria. Not exactly flush with money, Geoff thought he’d build a caravan for the trip, although he’d never done this before.

If ever there were a ‘right time, right place’ success story, Millard would be it.

From humble beginnings in the 1940’s, Millard grew to be one of the ‘big five’ caravan manufacturers in Australia (which also included Viscount, Franklin, Chesney and Coronet for those interested!).

Founded by Jim Darlington and his son John, Millard is one of Australia’s oldest caravan brands, and it still plays a role in how Australians enjoy the caravan lifestyle today.

Not only do I remember staying in one as a child, I also chose the Viscount caravan to be part of our Van Go Collections because it’s such an iconic Australian brand. One of my favourites, the Viscount 1968 Ambassador, with its distinctive ‘lightning flash’ or ‘twin flash’ design, features in our Winter Collection, and the 1978 Supreme Pop Top, with its fabulous pop-up roof, is part of our Magical Mornings range.
